CSIRO teamed up with Piotrek to develop a new generation of solid-state lithium batteries

Australia's national science agency CSIRO has teamed up with Japanese specialty chemicals manufacturer Piotrek..Within the next five years, the two sides will commercialize solid-state lithium battery technology globally. The partnership will equip products such as portable electronic devices, drones and electric vehicles with next-generation lithium battery technology, and meet key safety requirements for lithium batteries by preventing them from catching fire.

CSIRO and Piotrek will work together to develop the next generation of solid polymer electrolyte for lithium batteries using the former's unique reversible addition-break chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technology and the latter's ionic conductive polymer (ICP) technology. In layman's terms, the combination of the two technologies could make current lithium-ion battery technology safer and more efficient. RAFT technology can extend the versatility of different types of batteries and reduce the assembly and manufacturing costs of devices. ICP technology makes the whole solid state lithium battery performance more stable.

In addition, CSIRO will use robots with Piotrek to automate the process of manufacturing the electrolyte and will license other companies to use the new electrolyte formulation. At present, the main components of most lithium batteries on the market are not only positive and negative electrode materials, but also electrolyte and isolation membrane. The special combination of these materials and structures enables lithium ions to move back and forth between the positive and negative electrodes of the battery, forming charging and discharging functions.

However, when the battery is overcharged, it may release too much heat and damage the safety of the battery. The new electrolyte formula is designed to make the battery more stable and eliminate the negative possibility of over-charge/over-discharge at the source. According to the report, the next generation of solid state lithium batteries may be twice the energy of current lithium batteries, safety performance has also been greatly improved.

CSIRO is Australia's largest national science and technology research institution, mainly through scientific research to improve economic and social benefits for Australia, in the development of lithium battery technology, has more than 35 years of research experience. According to Adam best, CSIRO's head of battery research, there are a number of companies racing to develop solid-state lithium batteries, and it is expected that there will be products on the market using solid-state lithium batteries by 2025.
